The Winners Of The NHL Trade Deadline

Sep 22, 2014 9:14 PM

The day had much promise. There had been rumors circulating that some of the NHL?s premiere players would be on the move. The likes of Chris Pronger, Jay Bouwmeester and Tomas Kaberle were often included in trade proposals everywhere. We didn?t quite see the league?s elite players switch teams, but we did see a lot of ?depth? type of trades. Here?s a breakdown of Wednesday?s events: - Columbus Blue Jackets trade: Pascal Leclaire, 2009 2nd round pick, Ottawa Senators trade: Antoine Vermette This trade was somewhat of a shock to many. It was no secret that the Blue Jackets were trying to trade Leclaire with the emergence of rookie Steve Mason. They wanted to trade him now, and gain valuable assets to add to their playoff push. The Ottawa Senators receive a goaltender that will start next season. Pascal Leclaire is injured, and won?t be seeing any playing time this season. This trade has long term implications for the Ottawa Senators, as Leclaire is young enough that he?ll be the starter for years to come. Over the past 10 years, we?ve seen a goaltending carousel in Ottawa, and the team has had limited stability in the particular position. Ottawa is hoping that Leclaire can be the answer to their problems heading forward. In Antoine Vermette, the Columbus Blue Jackets get a fast, young player up front to play on one of their top two lines. He?ll provide depth at the forward position, and possibly play with Rick Nash. It remains to be seen whether or not Vermette will succeed in Hitchcock?s system, but they will need him to contribute if Columbus wishes to make the playoffs. Winner: Ottawa Senators. Finding a young, starting goaltender is not easy. History has shown that a team needs consistent stability in net in order to remain competitive. Ottawa believes they have found a goaltender that will start for years to come. - Calgary Flames trade: Lawrence Nycholat, Ryan Wilson, 2009 2nd round pick, Colorado Avalanche trade: Jordan Leopold Jordan Leopold goes to a team desperate to make a run at the Stanley Cup this year. He?ll provide depth on the blueline, and will fit into Keenan?s system nicely. Leopold is familiar with the market in Calgary, as he once wore a Flames jersey. Colorado is located at the bottom of the standings in the Western Conference, and rebuilding is certainly needed. They get a decent return for Leopold, as the 2nd round pick will be rather valuable in trying to accomplish a rebuild. Winner: Calgary Flames. Jordan Leopold is an excellent addition to an already dangerous Calgary Flames team. He?ll be extremely valuable in the post season, and will show his worth. - Pittsburgh Penguins trade: Danny Richmond, St. Louis Blues trade: Andy Wozniewski Not much to see here. It?s a minor depth move for both teams. The two players will likely rotate between their respective NHL squads and the minors. Winner: St. Louis. At one time, Danny Richmond was a mid level prospect. He was a 2nd round pick in 2003, and still may show he can be a useful player in the NHL. - Phoenix Coyotes trade: Mikael Tellqvist, Buffalo Sabres trade: 2010 4th round pick This is a solid trade for both teams. Mikael Tellqvist provides the Sabres with depth in net with Ryan Miller injured for an extended period of time. Tellqvist will likely split time with Lalime in Buffalo, and will fight to receive the starting gig until Miller returns. Phoenix picks up a 4th rounder from Buffalo, and it?s a solid return for Tellqvist. There wasn?t much of a market for goaltenders around the NHL, and Phoenix acquired what they could from Buffalo. Winner: Tie. Tellqvist will show that he?s an adequate backup, and will give Buffalo much needed depth. Phoenix saves some money, and picks up a future asset in return for their backup goaltender. - Toronto Maple Leafs claim Martin Gerber and Erik Reitz off waivers The Toronto Maple Leafs wanted to shut down Vesa Toskala for the rest of the season, as he required both hip and groin surgery. Martin Gerber will take over as the starting goaltender for the remainder of the season. The Leafs were uncomfortable with Justin Pogge and Curtis Joseph starting, so went out and acquired another goaltender. It was also rumored that the Leafs attempted to flip Martin Gerber, and acquire another asset in return. Ottawa had placed Gerber on re-entry waivers, meaning the Leafs will pay half of Gerber?s salary for the rest of the season. Martin Gerber will become a UFA at the end of the season, and won?t likely be retained by the Maple Leafs. Erik Reitz provides toughness on the blueline, and loves to fight. He does have limited mobility, and will likely see time either with the Marlies, or as a 3rd pairing defenseman with the Maple Leafs. - Dallas Stars claim Brendan Morrison off waivers Morrison isn?t quite the player he used to be when he was with the Vancouver Canucks. He has struggled this season, and will enjoy a fresh start with the Stars. He?ll provide depth up the middle when the Dallas Stars push to contend for a playoff spot. This is a good acquisition for Dallas, as they gave up nothing in return for Morrison?s services. - Boston Bruins trade: Petteri Nokelainen, Anaheim Ducks trade: Steve Montador Montador has had a successful season thus far with the Ducks, and has seen his statistics increase throughout the season. Montador will bring toughness to the Bruins blueline, likely as a 3rd pairing defender. This is a depth trade for the Bruins as they head into the playoffs as one of the premiere teams in the NHL. Petteri Nokelainen is a former first round pick of the New York Islanders. He was selected 16th overall in 2004, and at the age of 22, still has some potential left in him. Winner: Boston Bruins. Steve Montador will give the Bruins added toughness on their blueline, and will continue his success in Boston. - Calgary Flames trade: Matthew Lombardi, Brandon Prust, 1st round pick (Calgary?s choice), Phoenix Coyotes trade: Olli Jokinen, 3rd round pick This trade headlined the NHL trade deadline this year, and for good reason. Olli Jokinen is going to give the Flames much needed scoring depth up front, and will see time on one of the top two lines. Jokinen will give the Flames a scoring threat and a good player on the power play. Jokinen has never made the playoffs throughout his career, and has never played in a hockey market. How he responds will remain to be seen. The Phoenix Coyotes were trying to cut salary from their roster, and Jokinen was the perfect player to start with. His large contract was something the Coyotes were unwilling to pay heading forward. Matthew Lombardi is a skilled player at a very reasonable contract. He?s still young, and possesses tremendous speed and skill. If the Coyotes wanted, they could even receive a valuable asset in return for Lombardi should they pursue a trade in the near future. Brandon Prust is a decent prospect, and plays a gritty game that the Coyotes will enjoy. He?s currently injured with a concussion, but will likely stick with the team next season. The first round pick received from the Flames will be traded to them whenever they decide to. The Flames have the option to trade either their 2009 first, or their 2010 first round pick. Winner: Calgary Flames. Olli Jokinen will make this team that much better. With Jokinen, Cammalleri and Iginla up front, they now possess a dangerous trio offensively. - Boston Bruins trade: Matt Lashoff, Martins Karsums Tampa Bay Lightning trade: Mark Recchi, 2010 2nd round pick The Boston Bruins added to their group of forwards by picking up Mark Recchi. Recchi will make the Bruins a better squad, as his leadership is an extremely valuable asset. Mark Recchi knows how to win in the postseason, and has been there quite often. The Bruins have a ton of skilled youth, and will greatly benefit from having Recchi on the team. He may not be the player he once was, but he?s still useful. The 2nd round pick obtained in 2010 will be the wildcard that?ll determine the winner of this trade. With the Lightning rebuilding, that 2nd round pick may be extremely valuable next off-season. Matt Lashoff is an extremely talented young player. He?s a tremendous defensive prospect with a ton of upside. The former first round pick has played in 16 games with the Bruins this season, and is widely recognized as a good prospect throughout the NHL. This is an excellent return for Recchi. Winner: As of right now, Boston. The Bruins will benefit from having Recchi around, and that 2nd round pick may be just as valuable as a late first rounder. However, Lashoff is a good prospect that will help with the rebuild in Tampa. - New York Islanders trade: Bill Guerin, Pittsburgh Penguins trade: Conditional Draft Pick What an excellent trade for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Bill Guerin is exactly the type of player they could use right about now. He also comes at a cheap price, and will get the opportunity to play with an elite center, whether it?s Staal, Crosby or Malkin. Although Guerin is older, he?s still rather valuable and will become quite the asset once the playoffs begin. This was entirely a salary dump for the Islanders, and they wanted an asset in return as they continue to rebuild. Acquiring a draft choice for Guerin was wise, as they need all the future assets they can handle to turn this franchise around. Winner: Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins give Crosby, Malkin and company a winger to play with at a cheap price. - Phoenix Coyotes trade: Daniel Carcillo, Philadelphia Flyers trade: Scottie Upshall, 2011 2nd round pick This is one of the more interesting moves of the deadline. It?s a deal that came out of nowhere, and left some scratching their head. In Carcillo, the Flyers get the leagues leader in penalty minutes. While Carcillo is an enforcer, he has talent in other aspects of his game as well. However, he?s often in the dog house for taking inappropriate penalties. With the Flyers pushing to contend, they can?t afford inappropriate penalties throughout the playoffs. Regardless, Carcillo will provide the Flyers with additional toughness in their lineup. Phoenix picks up Scottie Upshall, a player that also plays with grit. The biggest knock on Upshall is his ability to stay healthy. Upshall has never played more than 61 games in an NHL season. If Upshall can stay healthy for the Flyers, they?re getting a player with great upside. A former 6th overall pick, Upshall still has some potential at the age of 25. The rebuilding Coyotes also acquire a future 2nd round pick, another asset they?re going to find useful heading forward. Winner: Philadelphia Flyers. While Upshall has the potential to be a solid player in the NHL, he just hasn?t shown it. With just 21 points this season, the Flyers expected more. If the Flyers can tame Carcillo, they?re the clear cut winner. - Toronto Maple Leafs trade: Nik Antropov, New York Rangers trade: 2009 2nd round pick, 2010 conditional draft pick The New York Rangers get a player that?s typically inconsistent. You really don?t know what you?re getting with Nik Antropov. He?s shown flashes that he can be a good top 6 forward in the league, especially in the past 2 seasons. He?s a 2nd line, 25 goal scoring center. He can play the wing as well, and will look to address the New York Rangers recent struggle to score goals. He?s a player that has played in a hockey market his entire career, and will be able to handle the spotlight once again in New York. The Toronto Maple Leafs made it clear that they were not going to re-sign Antropov this upcoming summer. So, they needed to trade the 29 year old native of Kazakhstan. Their initial asking price was a first round draft pick. However, teams were not meeting Burke?s asking price, and so he settled on a 2nd round pick. If the market were stronger, Antropov would?ve fetched that first round pick. Winner: New York Rangers. The Rangers will find that Antropov will be a valuable player for them down the stretch. He?s a big, talented player that can put the puck in the net, and came at a reasonable price. - Phoenix Coyotes trade: Derek Morris, New York Rangers trade: Dmitri Kalinin, Nigel Dawes, Petr Prucha The New York Rangers wanted depth on defense, and they get it with Derek Morris. Morris is a player that can provide some grit for the Rangers, while still chipping in offensively. He was in a poor situation in Phoenix, and welcomes a deal to a contending team. With the Rangers new additions, they?re looking much better than they did a week ago. The Coyotes also gain some depth. All three players acquired for Morris can step in and play for the Coyotes right away. Kalinin is a dependable player on the back end, and Prucha has shown success in the NHL. Petr Prucha is still young, and has shown the capability of putting the puck in the net. In 2005, Prucha scored 30 goals, and followed it with 22 goals the season after. Since then, he hasn?t shown much consistency and has just 9 points this season in 28 games. If previous play is any indication of what Prucha is capable of, the Coyotes just got themselves a fine player. Winner: Phoenix Coyotes. The Coyotes pick up 3 fairly young players that can contribute right away. If Prucha can regain his previous form, they just got the steal of the deadline. - Buffalo Sabres trade: 2009 2nd round pick, Toronto Maple Leafs trade: Dominic Moore The former waiver wire acquisition for the Leafs just netted them a 2nd round draft choice. Dominic Moore was once claimed by the Maple Leafs on waivers, and has since rejuvenated his career. Moore has had a career year for the Leafs, and has gained recognition throughout the NHL for his recent play. He?s a player that will provide Buffalo with leadership, grit and speed. He plays with a ton of heart, and Buffalo will certainly appreciate his play. While he was unable to agree to a contract with the Leafs, negotiations will likely begin in the off-season with Buffalo. The Maple Leafs have acquired yet another 2nd round pick, and adds that to their collection of draft picks. It was clear that Brian Burke wanted to replace the picks that previous GM?s John Ferguson Jr and Cliff Fletcher had traded away. He walks away with 2 more 2nd round picks, and may use them to trade up in the upcoming draft. Winner: Toronto Maple Leafs. Considering that acquiring Moore was a low risk move not long ago on waivers, acquiring a 2nd round pick as a rebuilding team is something they?ve been looking to do all season. - Anaheim Ducks trade: Eric O?Dell, Atlanta Thrashers trade: Erik Christensen At the age of 25, Christensen is starting to come into his own. He was a key piece to last years Hossa trade with Pittsburgh. He?s one of those players that don?t stand out to many, but coaches appreciate what they do. He falls into that category, and that?s the reason why the Ducks gave up a solid prospect in return. In Eric O?Dell the Thrashers pick up a player that was selected in the 2nd round in last years draft. At the age of 18, O?Dell has a lot of maturing to do, and we?ll be unable to see how he?ll turn out at the NHL level for quite some time. Winner: Anaheim Ducks. Christensen will step in right away and play a defined role with the Ducks. They?re still flirting with a playoff spot, and he may become valuable should they make the playoffs. Unlike many deadline deal moves, Christensen isn?t a rental player, and should stick with the Ducks for quite some time. - Florida Panthers trade: Noah Welch, 2009 3rd round pick, Tampa Bay Lightning trade: Steve Eminger This is a rather minor move. Both players had high expectations when they both entered the league, and neither has shown much since then. Eminger has now been traded twice this season, and this time to Florida, who will use him as depth on the blueline. The Lightning pick up a 3rd round pick in addition, which again, will be useful heading forward as they rebuild. Winner: Florida. Eminger can play, and will give Florida some depth heading forward. He?s still young enough to turn his career around with the Panthers. - Columbus Blue Jackets trade: 2009 4th round pick, Calgary Flames trade: Kevin Lalande At the age of 22, Lalande has some potential to play in the NHL one day as a full time backup. He?s been successful in the AHL this season, and may get called up to backup Steve Mason on occasion. The Flames pick up a 4th round pick for a player they likely did not have much use for. Winner: Columbus Blue Jackets. Picking up a 22 year old goaltender, who has had recent success in the AHL is never a poor decision. You?re likely looking at a similar player in the 4th round of the draft anyway. <- San Jose Sharks trade: Kyle McLaren, Philadelphia Flyers trade: 2009 6th round pick Picking up a veteran in McLaren for a 6th round pick doesn?t have much risk associated with it. The worst case scenario is that McLaren provides the Flyers with depth as a 7th/8th defenseman, as they push to contend this season. He wasn?t needed in San Jose, and they found a home for the 31 year old in Philadelphia. Winner: Philadelphia Flyers. They pick up a veteran with experience in McLaren at a reasonable price. He?ll be useful for depth purposes later in the season. - Anaheim Ducks trade: Samuel Pahlsson, Logan Stephenson, 2009 conditional draft pick, Chicago Blackhawks trade: James Wisniewski, Petri Kontiola Samuel Pahlsson is often recognized for the role he played when the Ducks won the Stanley Cup. His name is usually mentioned as a key contributor for that Stanley Cup win just a few seasons ago. The Blackhawks will need to provide him with a set role on the team. He?s not the type of player that will play out of his comfort zone, and succeed. If he?s given a similar role as he played in Anaheim, Chicago will greatly benefit from this deal. However, if he?s expected to play more of an offensive role, the Blackhawks will be sadly mistaken. James Wisniewski and Petri Kontiola are two players that have split time between the NHL and AHL in recent years. Both players are young enough to further develop their skills with more time and patience. They both look to be regular contributors in the NHL in the near future, while James Wisniewski is expected to see time with the Ducks this season. Winner: Chicago Blackhawks. They receive a fantastic role player in Pahlsson, as he?s one of the league?s premiere defenders/checkers. If he?s given the same role in Chicago, the Blackhawks just got a lot better. - San Jose Sharks trade: Nick Bonino, Timo Pielmeier, Conditional 2009 4th round pick, Anaheim Ducks trade: Travis Moen, Kent Huskins The San Jose sharks were looking for a checking type of forward, and got one of the best on the market in Moen. He?s exactly the type of player that?s going to fit in with the Sharks, and see immediate success. He?s not a flashy player in any regards, but he gets the job done night in and night out. He?s the perfect fit in San Jose, and could be that missing piece to the puzzle for the Sharks. Bonino and Pielmeier are both extremely young, and are both considered mid level prospects. They?ll both stay in junior this year, and won?t make an impact of any kind for years to come, if at all. Winner: San Jose Sharks. In recent deadlines, the Sharks have made a significant splash in an attempt to win a Stanley Cup with big name players. This year, they stayed content and picked up a solid two way forward. They didn?t give up much in return, and they?ll likely see the reward to this trade rather soon. - Edmonton Oilers acquire: Patrick O?Sullivan, 2009 2nd round pick, Carolina Hurricanes acquire: Erik Cole, 2009 5th round pick, Los Angeles Kings acquire: Justin Williams In a bizarre series of events as the deadline was completed, the Edmonton Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes and L.A Kings swapped key players of their respective teams. In Patrick O?Sullivan, the Oilers get a proven young talent that has fabulous offensive ability. He?s shown he can be successful at this level, and it?s quite surprising that the Kings decided to trade him away. Erik Cole started the season extremely poorly, but has recently started to pick it up with the Oilers. Cole is a proven 25-30 goal scorer, and is on pace to score around 20 this season. The former Stanley Cup winner needs to stay healthy with the Hurricanes, as he returns to the team that he won the cup with in 2005. Justin Williams is another player that has struggled to stay healthy in the past 2 seasons. He?s a player that again, is capable of a 30 goal season, evidenced by his 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons. There are question marks that surround each of the 3 players, but all have significant offensive upside. Winner: Edmonton Oilers. Patrick O?Sullivan is a player that hasn?t reached his full potential yet. He scored 20 goals for the Kings last year, and completely tore up the AHL. He?s the only one of the 3 that hasn?t had significant injury issues in the past. Edmonton also received a 2nd round pick, which they later used to pick up additional assets later in the day. - Edmonton Oilers trade: 2009 2nd round pick, Buffalo Sabres trade: Ales Kotalik Buffalo has had a hard time finding a place for Kotalik this season, and with the addition of Moore, was on the outside looking in. Kotalik has shown the ability to score in the past, but has struggled to put the puck in the net this season. Still, he provides Edmonton with much needed scoring depth. In exchange for Erik Cole, the Oilers picked up Patrick O?Sullivan and Ales Kotalik, two players that will greatly contribute to their franchise. It seems as if they made out like bandits today. Winner: Tie. The 2nd round pick the Sabres received was compensation for the one they lost later in the day to the Leafs for Dominic Moore. They essentially flipped Ales Kotalik for Dominic Moore, a wise move for the Buffalo Sabres. The Oilers gained some scoring depth upfront with Kotalik, and both teams benefit from the trade they agreed upon today. - Toronto Maple Leafs trade: Richard Petoit, Tampa Bay Lightning trade: Olaf Kolzig, Jamie Heward, Andy Rogers, 2009 4th round pick This is strictly a financial move for both the Leafs and the Lightning. Tampa Bay dumped the contracts of Kolzig and Heward on the Maple Leafs, and agreed to trade Rogers and a 4th round pick as compensation for taking on those contracts. Kolzig is out for the season, and won?t see any playing time for the Maple Leafs. It?ll be surprising to see if Heward sees any playing time with the Leafs as well. In Rogers, Toronto picks up a former first round draft pick of the Lightning. He?s disappointed thus far in his career, but there still may be some potential there. Winner: Tie. The Lightning wanted to dump two contracts off on the Leafs, and gave up 2 pieces they felt comfortable dealing. The Leafs had the cap space to absorb the contracts, and acquired a young player in Rogers, and yet another draft pick to add to the few they received Wednesday.

The Islanders are reportedly expected to trade captain Bill Guerin to a contender. A source close to Guerin claims that the Islanders have a deal in place to trade him. Carolina and Buffalo have plenty of cap room to accommodate the remaining $1.025 million on Guerin's salary, while Montreal and the Rangers are believed to have room as well. Guerin did not play in the Islanders' 2-0 win on Saturday night.
